A bautizo is a family ritual in Spain
A bautizo (baptism) is one of the big family events in Catholic Spain. In Alicante it usually takes place on a Saturday morning in the parish church, after which the family gathers for lunch at a restaurant or at home. Flowers go to the church, to the godmother and to the baby's mother.
Palette: pastel and white
The standard is pastel: off-white, cream, soft pink or soft blue depending on the baby's gender. In Alicante the classic is white carnations with orange blossom and eucalyptus. For a girl, dusty-pink ranunculus is added; for a boy, gypsophila and pale-blue lisianthus.
What to bring to the church
The altar arrangement is a low composition, no taller than 30 cm so it doesn't block sightlines. Usually white roses, lilies and gypsophila. The flowers stay in the church after the ceremony and decorate it for the following days.
What to give the mother and godmother
The godmother (madrina) receives a medium-sized bouquet in the same palette as the baby's outfit. The mother gets something more personal: peonies, garden roses, ranunculus. Usually handed over at the lunch afterwards.
What to give the baby
The baby obviously doesn't receive flowers. But there is a sweet tradition: placing a small bouquet of orange blossom and white daisies in the pram or cradle as a symbol of purity. It photographs beautifully.
