In Spain, flowers are a code
In Spanish culture, flowers have long been a language. The carnation in a flamenco dancer's hair, orange blossom on a bride's dress, an olive branch in someone's hand — every gesture carries a story. If you live in Spain or give flowers to a Spanish person, these codes are worth knowing.
Carnation (clavel) — Spain
The carnation is Spain's national flower. Red: passion and Andalusia. White: purity. Pink: maternal love. Given on Mother's Day (first Sunday of May), appropriate for any age and gender. In Alicante, white carnations are a frequent choice for baptisms.
Orange blossom (azahar) — purity and marriage
The tiny white flowers of the orange tree are a symbol of Valencia and Alicante. Woven into bridal crowns, added to bouquets for baptisms and first communions. The scent is strong and sweet. Season: April–May.
Olive branch (rama de olivo) — peace
The olive branch isn't gifted alone, but is often folded into bouquets as a sign of calm and lasting bond. Ideal for wedding anniversaries, housewarmings, reconciliations.
Jasmine (jazmín) — summer evenings
Jasmine in Spain is the southern night, a patio in Seville, a balcony in Córdoba. Given romantically, usually with white roses and greenery. Especially apt in summer.
Rose (rosa) — universal language
- **Red** — love. - **Pink** — tenderness, gratitude, admiration with no expectations. - **White** — respect, purity, condolence. At Spanish funerals, white roses are a frequent choice. - **Yellow** — in Spain it does NOT mean unfaithfulness (unlike Russia). It's friendship and joy.
Sunflower (girasol) — joy
A summer flower with no subtext beyond «I'm in a good mood and thinking of you». Great for teenagers, colleagues, recovery from illness, starting university.
Calla lilies (calas) — elegance
Architectural, premium. Never gifted in large numbers — 3–7 stems in a composition. Right for weddings, anniversaries, corporate events. Not for a friendly gesture.
Chrysanthemum (crisantemo) — careful
In Spain, as across the Mediterranean, the chrysanthemum is the flower of All Saints' Day (November 1) and cemeteries. Don't give chrysanthemums on a birthday or romantically — it will read strangely. Exception: large designer compositions where chrysanthemum is one of ten varieties.
