Why Alicante's climate is tough on flowers
In summer we routinely see +30 °C, dry sea wind and strong light from balconies and terraces. Most «office» flowers last 2–3 days in those conditions. That's why at our florist in Alicante we keep a short list of varieties proven over years of work along the Costa Blanca.
Top flowers that last 7–10 days
- **Lisianthus (eustoma).** The hero of a Mediterranean bouquet: 7–10 days in a vase, fine with dry air, opens bud after bud. - **Hydrangea.** With a clean cut and regular water change it lasts 5–8 days even on a seaside terrace. Loves heavy watering and shade. - **Garden chrysanthemum.** A quiet favourite: 10–14 days, heat-tolerant, beautiful in a mono-bouquet. - **Alstroemeria.** Up to 14 days. One of the most resilient flowers for the Alicante climate. - **Anthurium and phalaenopsis orchid.** Not a classic bouquet flower, but in compositions they hold 2–3 weeks. - **Eucalyptus, olive branch, ruscus.** Greens that dry beautifully — when the bouquet is gone, the greenery stays as a dried piece.
Order with care
- **Peonies.** Gorgeous, but in July–August in Alicante they last 3–4 days. Better from October to June. - **Double tulips.** Perfect in winter and spring, not for heat. - **Wild daisies, poppies.** One-day romance — for a shoot, not a gift.
5 rules to make a bouquet last longer in Alicante
1. **Re-cut stems every 2 days** on an angle with a sharp knife — never scissors. 2. **Change the water daily.** In heat, bacteria in the water are the main enemy. 3. **Keep away from direct sun and AC airflow.** Ideal spot: a shaded room at 20–22 °C. 4. **Mist hydrangea and greens** morning and evening — they drink through the leaf too. 5. **Strip lower leaves** so they don't rot in the water.
How we use this
When you order a bouquet at Brisalta we ask where it will sit — an air-conditioned home, a restaurant terrace, a seaside hotel. For each scenario we pick varieties that will last the longest. It's part of our freshness guarantee and the reason we're a florist in Alicante trusted by hotels and villas across the Costa Blanca.
