The legend of Sant Jordi
The Catalan legend goes: the knight Jordi slew the dragon, and from the beast's blood a rosebush of red roses bloomed. He cut one and gave it to the rescued princess. That's how the gesture was born: April 23 is the day of the red rose.
The day of the rose and the book
Since 1926, April 23 is also Book Day (Cervantes and Shakespeare both died on that date). The tradition fused two gifts: he gives a rose, she gives a book. The gesture long ago outgrew its gender: now everyone gives one — to anyone.
How it's lived in Alicante
The Valencian Community isn't Catalonia, but April 23 is visible in Alicante: flower stands on the Explanada, libraries putting books out on the street, restaurants with a «Sant Jordi menu». The tradition feels strongest among Catalan-speaking families, expats from Barcelona, and people who simply love a beautiful gesture.
